The last seven days saw some massive news stories hit the headlines so let’s spare a few moments to look back at some of the biggest from last week’s news coverage
In Japan the city of Hiroshima commemorated the 70th anniversary of the first ever use of an atomic weapon in history last Thursday. Bells were tolled across the city at 8:15am local time as tens of thousands observed a moment of silence at the Peace Memorial park led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and foreign delegates. Approximately 70,000 people died in the initial detonation on August 6th 1945, or the firestorms it caused, the same number again would succumb to the effects within the year.
In the US presidential hopeful Donald Trump caused some controversy both during and after the first televised Republican debate implying that Megyn Kelly, one of the Fox News journalists hosting the event, had been overly hostile in her questioning of his attitude to women due to her menstrual cycle. “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her whatever.” Trump said, later claiming that only a “sick person” would interpret that as being about menstruation.
Typhoon Soudelor caused large swathes of destruction as it swept across first eastern Taiwan and then China’s Fujian province. With sustained winds of over 100mph according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, the Chinese authorities took no chances and evacuated some 163,000 people as well as ordering 32,000 vessels to return to port. The massive storm left millions of households in the region without power or running water and has killed and injured hundreds both in Taiwan and on the mainland.
In sport England’s Stuart Broad bowled an amazing eight for 15 in the fourth test in the Ashes helping the home nation go 3-1 up in the five match series and regain the trophy from apparently hapless arch rivals Australia whose performance was dismal and disappointing. After the match Michael Clarke, the Aussie captain, announced his retirement and if you want to know who’ll replace him at the helm you’ll have to read our daily news pages, but in the meantime let’s take a look back at the big stories from last week.
