With no shortage of big news stories last week we go over some of the most important that hit the headlines in the last seven days
The National Security Agency’s mass surveillance programs were ruled illegal by a US court last week after it decided the shadowy security body had strayed beyond it’s congressional remit under the provisions of the Patriot Act. With the act already due to expire its replacement, the Freedom Act still facing vigorous debate as partisan politics once again sees the two wings of the political system at odds over this invasion of citizen’s privacy.
The Washington Post has collated data showing that in the first five months of the year US police killed an average of two people a day, and that in of local population black people were three times more likely to be shot than whites or other minorities. The rate of 2.6 a day is almost double that recorded by the FBI that average just 1.1 a day. There are no official figures, the 17,000 law enforcement agencies in the US merely asked to self-report on the number of people they kill.
Japanese seismologists warned Japan to remain alert after an earthquake that ed 7.8 on the Richter scale rumbled off the nation’s southern shores shaking buildings nearly a minute in the capital Tokyo. A separate quake of 6.2 followed off the southern Izu Islands, in a week that also saw dramatic footage broadcast of a Volcano in the far south of the country erupting causing the evacuation of the islanders in the vicinity.
In sport Arsenal spanked Aston Villa four nil in the FA Cup final at Wembley. With Villa not playing to their potential they were roundly punished by Wenger’s side who dominated play and at times seemed to be toying with the boys from Brum. Meanwhile a news agent’s window in Bristol that usually carries small ads on cards (as is common in the UK) was noted for including one offering 20 GBP an hour to any woman between the ages of 20 and 55 who was willing to clean whilst nude. The 69 year old who placed the add has said to have gotten nearly 11 applicants a day since posting the advert “‘If I was a pervert, I would use an escort agency.” He said, “But I’m not doing anything illegal, I’m not harming anyone.”
